Question(s)

The aim of DisruptJ20 is to cause chaos in Washington DC and block inauguration activities for President-elect Trump. [“DisruptJ20” stands for “Disrupt January 20”.]

The website explains, “DisruptJ20 will be the start of the resistance. We must take to the streets and protest, blockade, disrupt, intervene, sit in, walk out, rise up, and make more noise and good trouble than the establishment can bear. The parade must be stopped. We must delegitimize Trump and all he represents.”

One type of humor editorial cartoonists use is irony. Irony is defined as when the opposite of what you expect to happen occurs. Describe the irony in Lisa Benson’s cartoon.

Answer(s)

You expect vendors at an inauguration to be selling merchandise which celebrates the optimism people feel when attending a presidential inauguration, such as the vendor on the left.

The vendor on the right, instead of selling more t-shirts, mugs, etc., is selling something completely unexpected – implements to be used to cause chaos.
