Answers
1. The tone of the cartoon is: c) light-hearted/humorous
2. The cartoonist is pointing out in a humorous way that Democrat lawmakers “can’t read the room” and are “tone-deaf” – that their actions clash with widespread public frustration over the number of criminal illegal aliens who are in our country – or that Democrats are focusing on the wrong issues.
3. To what recent news story does this cartoon refer?
Senator Chris Van Hollen, Democrat from Maryland traveled to El Salvador to meet with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador who had been mistakenly deported, to conduct a wellness check.
Abrego Garcia is an illegal immigrant and MS-13 gang member, as stated by the Trump administration. The media and Democrats labeled him a “Maryland dad” who was wrongly deported and sent to El Salvador’s prison for gang members.
Senator Van Hollen told CNN he did not ask Abrego Garcia whether he is or has ever been a member of MS-13 when he met him in El Salvador last week. The Democratic Senator says that Abrego Garcia is a “constituent” of Maryland who was unlawfully deported, and “he’s being denied his due process rights.”
Following the amount of media attention Van Hollen received from his great concern for Abrego Garcia, 4 more Democrat lawmakers have gone to El Salvador to demand to meet with Abrego Garcia. They were denied access and there is no indication they met with the Salvadoran authorities.
The mother of Rachel Morin, a Maryland mother of 5 who was murdered by an illegal alien while she was out for a run, has publicly stated that Van Hollen never contacted her family to offer condolences or support after her daughter’s death. She questioned why he cares so much about Abrego Garcia but did not express sympathy or concern for her family.
