1. Editorial cartoonists often use humor through exaggeration to illustrate a news item. What news story are cartoonists Margolis and Cox illustrating in this cartoon?
To what recent news story does this cartoon refer?
In a 25-page letter last week, Iran’s murderous Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) called on Americans to vote against President Trump ahead of the midterm elections to change U.S. policy toward Tehran and accept the offer of a “peaceful coexistence.” The letter criticized Trump’s policies toward Iran (including military pressure and sanctions) and framed Democrats as preferable.
2. What is the cartoonists’ intended meaning?
The cartoonists portray the authoritarian Iranian regime as actively campaigning for the Democrats.
The cartoon implies that America’s adversary (the Iranian regime) views a Democratic victory as favorable to its own interests.
The cartoonists are asserting that if Democrats win control of Congress, they will help the regime (the IRGC and the Mullahs) survive – a Democratic win would benefit Iran at America’s expense because the Democrats’ soft policies toward the Iranian regime would help them (maintain authoritarian control of their own people, gain nuclear weapons to use against the West and their Arab enemies, fund their terrorist proxies…).
