1. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), who are both “Democratic Socialists.”
2. Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez both vehemently oppose the use of fossil fuels, and advocate for the elimination of fossil fuels, yet are using private jets, which burn A LOT more fossil fuels than taking a commercial flight with the rest of us would. They leave a high carbon footprint with their use of private air travel. Also, critics argue that first-class or private travel reflects elitism, contradicting their working-class advocacy.
Both Sanders and AOC position themselves as champions of the working class and critics of wealth concentration. Private jets, associated with luxury and exclusivity, are seen by detractors as a symbol of the elite privilege they critique, especially when paired with their calls for sacrifices.
3. The Fighting Oligarchy Tour, led by Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), is a series of political rallies across the United States that began in February 2025, following Donald Trump’s reelection in November 2024. The tour aims to mobilize opposition to what Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez describe as an emerging oligarchy — a system where a small, wealthy elite, including billionaires and corporations, exerts disproportionate control over political and economic systems.
Their actions suggest a “do as I say, not as I do” attitude, eroding their credibility on climate and economic justice.
