A Giant Mistake
“Vice President Joe Biden had his ‘oops’ moment Wednesday speaking in a 49er-crazed San Francisco when he told a crowd at a city political fundraiser that ‘the Giants are on their way to the Super Bowl,’ ” reports Carla Marinucci of the San Francisco Chronicle. In fact, the New York Giants face the San Francisco 49ers this weekend in the National Football Conference championship, and the winner goes on to the Super Bowl two weeks later.

In fairness to Biden, he’s probably just getting his sports mixed up. There is a team called the San Francisco Giants–until 1958, also the New York Giants–but it plays baseball, not football. As recently as 2010 those Giants went to the World Series, considered by some to be the Super Bowl of baseball.

And Biden can count himself lucky that all the NFL teams still in contention–the others are the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots–come from states President Obama is likely to carry in November even if he loses in a landslide. Imagine the trouble he’d be in if he’d made this mistake at the expense of the Bengals, Broncos, Lions, Packers or Steelers.
