1. Two Republican / Democratic aldermen in Chicago have proposed an ordinance to ban pedestrians from texting or using a cellphone while walking through an intersection. One of the aldermen said the law would "increase safety by eliminating distractions for pedestrians."

2. The proposed Chicago ordinance, which would have to pass the full City Council to take effect, calls for fines of up to $50 / $500 for each incident of using a mobile device while crossing a street or highway.

3. Robert Mugabe, the 93 year-old despot who ruled Zimbabwe for almost 14 / 40 years, was ousted in November following a military takeover. Mugabe held on for a week after the takeover and only resigned after parliament began an impeachment process against him that could legally oust of him.

4. The military staged the takeover after Mugabe fired his vice president, who was favored by his party to succeed him as president. Mugabe wanted to make way for his his wife / his son  to become president.

5. The U.S. Department of Justice is conducting an investigation of Harvard University’s affirmative action policies and whether the university discriminates against Asian-American / African-American applicants.

6. Two different organizations representing students who were not accepted to the university allege that Harvard intentionally /accidentally discriminates against this group when they apply by limiting the number who are admitted.

7.  The U.S. federal government established the Confined Spaces Entry Team seven years ago to locate, map and seal off the tunnels used by cartels to smuggle drugs from Mexico to San Diego and beyond. The team has found more than 8 / 80 tunnels in California and Arizona since 2011.

8.  Several of the team members are military veterans. They call themselves Friends of Vietnam Vets / tunnel rats in honor of the Vietnam War troops who went underground in search of enemy fighters, sometimes engaging in hand-to-hand combat.

9.  Following North Korea’s launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile this week, the U.S., Japan and South Korea called for an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council. During the meeting, U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley called on China to cut off crude oil / food supplies to North Korea.

10. Regarding war with North Korea, Ambassador Haley said, “The dictator of North Korea made a choice yesterday that brings the world closer to war, not farther from it. We have never sought war with North Korea, and still today we do not seek it. If war does come, it will be because of continued acts of aggression like we witnessed yesterday.
