News Corp. Gives to GOP; NBC, ABC, CBS Employees Give to Dems

…Employees of ABC, CBS and NBC contributed more than $1 million to Democratic candidates and campaign committees in 2008, according to an analysis…

The Democratic total of $1,020,816 was given by 1,160 employees of the three major broadcast television networks, with an average contribution of $880.

By contrast, only 193 of the employees contributed to Republican candidates and campaign committees, for a total of $142,863. The average Republican contribution was $744.

Ninety-six contributions by broadcast network employees to the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Senate and House campaign committees totaled $217,881.

Thirty-eight contributions by broadcast network employees to the Republican National Committee and the Republican Senate and House campaign committees totaled $23,805.

After Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation, which owns Fox News, made a $1 million contribution to the Republican Governors Association,… Nathan Daschle, executive director of the Democratic Governors Association … [wrote to Fox News:]  “In the interest of some fairness and balance, I request that you add a formal disclaimer to your coverage any time any of your programs covers governors or gubernatorial races between now and Election Day,” [Daschle suggested the disclaimer read “News Corp., parent company of Fox News, provided $1 million to defeat Democratic governors in November.”

…But … if the political donations of the corporate parent of Fox News are relevant to its political coverage, as suggested by Daschle, doesn’t that mean the political donations of people with other media organizations are just as relevant?  [And shouldn’t he also ask NBC, CBS and ABC to post the disclaimer on their election coverage: “The majority of our network’s employees’ campaign donations went to Democratic candidates.”
