Questions

1. The purpose of an editorial/commentary is to explain, persuade, warn, criticize, entertain, praise or answer. What do you think is the purpose of Victor Davis Hanson’s editorial? Explain your answer.

2. What is the main idea of Mr. Hanson’s commentary?

3. For each of the points made by Mr. Hanson, write agree or disagree. Explain your answers.

  1. “…the Democrats’ method of fighting for DACA suggests that they are broadly in favor of letting immigration dysfunction continue apace. Why else would they refuse to give President Trump any significant concessions in the DACA negotiations [with President Trump] — no wall, no end to chain migration, no cessation of visa lotteries?” (paragraph 6)
  2. “Certainly, California or New Mexico would resent bitterly any other state that likewise nullified the authority of federal laws. California Gov. Jerry Brown would grow irate if Utah or Alabama followed suit in defiance of Washington, declaring elements of national environmental legislation, gun registration statutes or safety standards null and void in their local and state jurisdictions.” (paragraph 19)
  3. “Forgotten also are historic truths about immigration. In the past, immigration has proven a great boon to a host country — if it was legal, measured, meritocratic and diverse. That way, assimilation, integration and mastery of native languages and customs were enhanced by immigrants who in turn enriched their adopted country.” (paragraph 19)
