NOTE: Before answering the questions, read the "Background" and watch the video under "Resources" below.
1. When will British citizens be required to have a Digital ID (the "Brit Card")?
2. Keir Starmer is a leftist/socialist who after 2020 moved the Labour Party (which holds Socialist positions) to the left-center to increase candidates electability. What is his stated purpose for imposing mandatory Digital ID cards on anyone who wants to get a job, buy a house, get healthcare, etc...?
3. Close to 3 million Britons signed a petition opposing the mandatory Digital ID. Why are the left and right opposed to Starmer's push to implement this plan?
4. a) What is supposed to happen when a petition to Parliament gets a certain number of signatures? Be specific.
b) How did Starmer's majority Labour Party respond to the petition?
c) Why do you think this is so?
5. a) How has British support for / opposition to the Digital ID shifted over the past several months?
b) Why do you think this is so?
6. Consider the following "NoToDigitalID" X posts:
From Oct. 5:
Digital ID is not a left vs right issue.
It is freedom vs control.
Democracy vs authoritarianism.
Liberty vs constraint.
Left wing politics or right wing politics, we are in this together.
and also on Oct. 5:
Digital ID sounds convenient- until you realize what it costs.
A single login for everything means a single point of control.
Once your identity, finances, and access to services live in one digital profile, whoever controls that system controls you.
Privacy isn’t “old-fashioned.” It’s freedom.
Say no to digital ID.
Then watch the video under "Resources" with Louis Mosley, head of Palantir in the UK, who criticizes the government's plan for mandatory Digital ID, stating it lacks a “clear public mandate,” and noting “It's a program that needs to be decided at the ballot box, not in the company boardroom.”
Do you agree or disagree with these reasons for opposing Keir Starmer's attempts to establish mandatory Digital ID on the citizens of the UK? Explain your answer.
CHALLENGE: The only way Keir Starmer can think of to curb illegal immigration in the UK is to try to make it hard for illegals to get jobs (and to jeopardize the freedom and privacy of citizens while doing so). List 2-3 other ways the UK could get people to stop people from coming into the country and/or working illegally.
