7. President Trump has [offered] to send the National Guard to Chicago to help the police, arguing the city's crime rates demand urgent intervention. He says his administration has an obligation to protect this country and that federal intervention would rapidly reduce crime, citing actions he says were successful this summer in Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles.
ABC News [and many other news outlets claim]: "Despite Trump’s characterization, recent crime statistics show notable declines in violent crime and homicides in Chicago in 2025, undermining claims that the city is in crisis relative to previous years. Local [Democratic progressive] leaders stress addressing root causes [of crime and shootings] and investing in prevention, not just law enforcement sweeps."
Democratic leaders (who run all?/most? major city in the U.S.) say crime is actually down, and we do not need increased police or the national guard. Republicans support Trump's efforts, and say that the "soft on crime" laws enacted by Democrats in these cities need to be changed.
