“Everybody here knows about the markers. We studied them in school.”
Yuto Kimura, 12, referring to stone markers, some more than 600 years old, in Japan that warn not to build below those points because of the danger of tsunamis.

“When the tsunami came, my mom got me from school and then the whole village climbed to higher ground,” he said. His small village of Aneyoshi escaped damage from the March tsunami because all of the homes are on ground above one such tablet.

Aneyoshi, part of the city of Miyako, has been battered repeatedly by tsunamis, including a huge one in 1896.
