Hey Carlos, Take a Jill Pill!
“There’s been speculation” about whether [Mexican billionaire] Carlos Slim, second-largest shareholder of the struggling New York Times Co., “ultimately plans on becoming a global media mogul and snatching up the paper,” The Atlantic Wire’s Uri Friedman…reports:

But, as The Washington Post’s Anup Kaphle points out on Twitter, the last few paragraphs of a Daily Beast piece [Tuesday about] the world’s richest man suggest that Slim’s interest in The Times may be purely financial–one investment among many–as Slim himself has often suggested. When The Daily Beast’s Lloyd Grove asks Slim what he thinks of The Times’s new editor, Jill Abramson, Slim responds, “I’m sorry. Who?”

We’ll tell you who: Jill Abramson, recipient of the 2011 Visionary Leadership Award from the International Festival of Arts and Ideas. We’ve never heard of the IFOAAI either, but it sure sounds prestigious. And the New Haven (Conn.) Independent has more background on Abramson:

Mary Lou Aleskie, the festival’s executive director, said in a press release that Abramson “is a trailblazer in every sense of the word and not only has kicked open doors for women at The New York Times, but is also uniquely positioned at the intersection of digital innovation and reporting on the world’s critical events.” . . .

In comments to newspaper employees, the New York Times story indicates, Abramson identified “more than a dozen women at The Times who have helped her along the way, including the company’s chief executive, Janet L. Robinson. ‘Every executive editor stands on the shoulders of others,’ she said.”

Wow, inspiring stuff. She blazed trails and kicked open doors, and now she stands on the shoulders of others at an intersection. She’s uniquely positioned for sure.
